Absinthe is anywhere between 45%-75% alcohol, so it is somewhat more powerful than more popular spirits...such as rum, vodka, tequila, gin, brandy, or whiskey. Just like any alcoholic beverage, your body weight and the amount of beverage you consume will determine how intoxicated you become. When absinthe is prepared for consumption, normally, cold water is run over a sugar cube atop a slotted metal spoon and dripped into the absinthe to dilute it. This is the proper way to enjoy it. Absinthe of years ago contained decent amounts of an ingredient called "wormwood" (thujone), This compound was thought to produce hallucinations, but it has since been disproven. Modern absinthe contains minimal amounts of wormwood and should be no more dangerous to drink than any common spirit. As such, the long-term ban which had existed for decades has been removed and it is once-again available in the U.S. and, most likely, New York.

Your friend is wrong. It's no different than any other booze. Oh wait, yes it is, because it tastes rank.

no. 1, absinthe doesn't make u hallucinate.i dunno whether the absinthe u can buy here at the states or absinthe at some bars have pure wormwood in it. but that's what u wanna look for when buying it cuz well, it wouldn't really be absinthe without pure wormwood. vodka generally has 40% alcohol volume. there are bottles of absinthe with 40% as well as those that have 55%.just to give u a heads up on what it tastes like, it's like black licorice.as far as buying it, i think u can buy some online. or u can just buy it in europe and bring it home. (u can get real absinthe outside czech unlike the guy above said. the best absinthe might be in czech, but u can definitely get real absinthe elsewhere too)
