A family member told me it's too much for a birthday and I shouldn't buy any decorations at all. What do you guys think? (Yes this is my first child) :-)I was planning on the pink carnation one...http://www.belvedereflowers.com/blog/100_8739.jpg

I really dislike the comments "she won't remember it" or "you'll have to outdo yourself every year" or "she won't appreciate it". When I do something for my child, it is because I am doing it from the heart. If you want to have nice centerpieces on her first birthday, go right ahead. You will have pictures and make memories and will be able to share them with her someday and she will look back and see how much you cared about her birthday. Sure, there are other ways to show you care but going that extra mile to decorate is a very nice gesture. Look at it this way. If you don't do it, somebody will comment you didn't decorate very nicely. If you do it, somebody will comment she is spoiled or you went too far. Either way somebody is gonna have something to say about it.

There's nothing wrong with having flowers at any time and the carnation centrepiece is pretty and simple, but you have to consider the escalation factor. At one year old, your daughter barely knows what a birthday is. If you start off with a fancy party for her first, by the time you get to her sixteenth you'll be hiring a hall, a band, a caterer, and limos, and buying her an expensive dress, and it will cost you thousands. For smaller kids, having all the birthday food and a bunch of people around ought to be enough excitement for one day.

It's bordering over the top but the pink carnation one is more simple and would be more appropriate. Are you just having a formal sit down with family and close friends or what?

===Honestly, yes - I think it's a little over the top for a baby's birthday party. Why not get a couple of pink & white balloon bouquets that say "happy birthday" on them. She might even find them entertaining.======================================…

I do think its a bit over the top. You don't want to out-do yourself now because, as the years go by you are going to find yourself feeling like you have to do something big every year. I would say keep it simple. Your daughter isn't going to know the difference whether you have a flower arrangement or not. You should buy decorations, but keep them to balloons and streamers. Something fun and colorful. Have fun! :)
