The drinking age is 18, yes, but is it always adhered to?

It's always adhered to by responsible bars, supermarkets and off licences, they risk a heavy fine and losing their licence to sell alcohol if they do.Of course if you look a lot older it's quite possible, also the more unscrupulous outlets will sell alcohol to younger people, you will never stop that.It is also an offence for you to get a person more than eighteen to buy it for you, for them also. The age limit for drinking wine and beer in a restaurant is sixteen, but they are within their rights to refuse to sell it to you if you are unaccompanied. These are the laws, what you do with them is up to you, good luck.

As far as I know 18 is 18 .. if you are 17 it won't kill you to wait a few more months

I would say, it is pretty easy to obtain alcohol in Great Britain. While legally you are not allowed to buy alcohol there if you are under 18, it is perfectly legal to consume it at home, not in bars. So, if there is one person over age 18, who buys, there is no law against drinking it.
