I have been a vegetarian since I was around 12 (I am 24.) The difference between a vegan and a vegetarian is vegans avoid all animal products. They do not eat milk, eggs, yogurt, cheese, etc, while vegetarians do. Vegetarians do not eat anything that used to be alive. Some eat fish but I think that is silly. It also used to be alive. The reason why I am a vegetarian is because the animals that give us meat are treated very poorly, not like they are living beings at all. When you treat animals that way I feel it diminishes your quality of life too (because you are diminishing theirs). Good for you that you want to become vegetarian! Your parents probably want to make sure you get enough protein. This is very imporrtant. I eat beans and rice a lot with yummy vegetables and cheese in a tortilla. I also make a lot of humus. You will need to make sure you make the effort to eat enough protein. I hope you decide to be a vegetarian. It is a great decision to make, in my opinion. I will never eat meat again.

I would just like to take this time to say that all of you who say becoming a vegetarian is wrong, you're ignorant and really need to learn your facts. If it were so wrong, then would Ben Franklin, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Albert Einstein, some of the smartest men to ever live, have refused to eat meat?

Vegetarians eat plant-based foods and may eat one or more of the following: eggs, fish, dairy. Vegans only eat plant-based foods. Raw vegans eat only raw and plain/sprouted/lacto-fermented plant-based foods (some foods like grains and beans and veggies in the cabbage family cannot be eaten without sprouting or fermenting without some disruption of digestion and assimilation of nutrients). What can you NOT eat? Technically, the flesh of any animal. Some quibble over whether a fish is an animal or not. Some won't eat eggs, i.e. baby animal flesh. Dairy is just a product that animals feed to their young, and doesn't count as flesh. YOU get to decide what sort of vegetarian you want to be: Vegan, Lacto-veg (dairy is ok), Ovo-Lacto (eggs and dairy is ok), and pescetarian (eats fish). MIght be a bit of a mouthful if you include all of those at once. What CAN vegetarians eat?Vegetarians can eat a lot of different things. Like cheese pizza, if they want. But if you choose to do that all the time, don't expect to stay very healthy. You will probably need to supplement with vitamin B-12 and Vitamin D, as well. Here are a few ideas, some with eggs/dairy/fish, and some without: Toasted quinoa (a high protein grain) with mixed, sauteed vegetables of your choice can be really savory and healthy, and add a nice green salad on the side. Snacks of apple slices with almond butter, celery with cream cheese, cucumber sandwiches with mayonnaise (preferably homemade mayo). Salads of all veggies/fruits, or can be topped with hard boiled eggs or cheese. Vegetarian lasagna. Pasta primavera. Baba Ganoush (eggplant and tahini dip) with delicious, fresh Indian Flatbread called Naan (we have it at our grocery). OMG. Delish. Green smoothies (VERY good for you)...google it for recipes and ideas. Veggie juice. Eggs and toast for breakfast. If you do fish, bagels and lox. Eggs and dairy - pudding. You can make moist cakes and muffins by adding things like shredded zuchini, applesauce or banana to the recipes. Buckwheat pancakes with maple syrup. Baked beans. Lentil - veggie soup. All-bean chili (don't forget the beano). Potato bisque made with vegetarian broth. Carrot Cumin soup with a dollop of yogurtbroccoli cheese soupbroccoli rice and cheese casserolemacaroni and cheesePasta with alfredo saucepico de gallo with chipsnachosvegetarian burritosstrawberries dipped in sweetened sour creamany kind of yogurt and fruit5-minute-a-day artisan bread with or without real butterApple butter, fruit jellies and jamsapple pie, pumpkin pie, pecan pie.........berry crisp, peach crisp, apple crisp......pop tartspotato chipsReally, the list can go on and on and on and on......There are tons of options for vegetarians.

Then be one! You are your own person and you make the decisions that affect your life. A vegetarian doesn't eat meat. A vegan doesn't eat/use anything that was made from an animal. From not eating the fries and Burger King because they use the same oil to cook chicken tenders in to not wearing leather. Its takes a lot more discipline but well worth it.

If you're going to be a strict vegetarian (no seafood or chicken, eggs) then you should look at the ingredients of food or candy for something called gelatin, (gummy bears have that for an example) you shouldn't eat things with this. Also a Vegan is someone who doesn't eat/drinks anything that has eyes that means (no eggs) no milk (they also don't wear leather, fur or anything to do with animals ). A vegetarian can eat eggs, honey, and drink milk or things with milk in it.Hope that helps.. :)
