I've always heard southerns talking about how great their sweetened iced tea is. Is it truly different in it's preparation than simply adding sugar to tea? if so, how?

Northern Ice Tea is either bottled and brews hot and sugar is added when cold if desired.Southern sweet tea (i think is horrible I moved form NY to nc) is brewed hot with sugar in it while its brewing hot. And i dont mean one pack of splenda per cup, I mean 2 cups of sugar for about 4 cups of brewing tea.Its extremely unhealthely.

Well we in the south add alot of sugar, baking soda to cut out the bitterness, and a squeeze of lemon to our tea. So when you look at the northern tea they always bring it out unsweetened.

The Iced tea up here in NY is a lot different from down in say, Georgia. I've lived in both and really prefer Plain, real, iced tea with a little bit of lemon. I gotta say, I hate sweet tea almost more then anything. It ruins the tea flavor and covers up what REAL tea is suppose to be!

If you say "tea", in the south you get sweet iced tea. In the north you get hot tea. If you say "iced tea" it is sweet in the south and not the north. If you ask for "sweet tea" in the south they say "of course it is sweet" in the north, they give you packets of sugar. That really is about it. And, all the northerners complain about how hard it is to get sweeteners to dissolve in tea with ice in it.

Real sweet tea (Southern tea) is SOOOOOOO sweet. It's perfect for a blazing hot day with crazy humidity while you're sitting on the porch in a swing.Sweet teaI grew up by Cincinnati, where it's very hard to find (border city). By the time you get to Louisville, you can start to find it, but only in select establishments. Further south and it gets perfect.I wouldn't drink it every day (diabetes in a teacup) but O my goodness do I love it.

I've NEVER heard of baking soda in tea lolSweet tea is the house wine of the south, we drink it all day, every day.Yes, have a lot of sugar in it, but it's usually steeped darker and the sugar is put in the brew when it's hot.I like my tea sweet, but not diabetic moment sweet. That's why I don't drink sweet tea in Georgia lol.

Well, my husband is from WI and he had never had iced tea the way I was taught to make it until we moved in together. I am from VA. Basically I brew mine on top of the stove by using about 4 family size tea bags in a saucepot until boiling then I let it simmer for about 10 minutes.I put about 1 and 1/2 cups of sugar in the bottom of my gallon pitcher then pour the hot tea over it and stir until the sugar melts. Then just keep refilling the pot with the tea bags still inside until the pitcher is full and stir well. Serve over ice and add lemon if you like it.Sounds simple I know but his mother's tea was hideous so must be something different about mine.
