Spaghetti Sauce...do you always have to add just a little something to your favorite brand?

I absolutely love Ragu Traditional...but always have to add minced onion, parsley flakes, oregano and garlic powder...to get that special flavor that's tradition in our house. Can you use your favorite brand 'straight from the jar'? Or, do you feel compelled to personalize it?

We love the Ragu Old World Style with Meat--I always add minced onions to it, though. I didn’t really think about why I do this until your question popped up. I think the onions enhance the flavor, but the times that I’ve added too many other seasonings (oregano, garlic powder), I seem to have mucked up the flavor. So I just stick to the minced onions. And it does make me feel more like a cook, you’re right! We’ve tried other brands but always come back to the Ragu with my personalized little touch of minced onions (oh, and I forgot, I also add browned ground beef, since we have meat eaters in the family).Did you know there's even a Ragu website? I sure didn't! http://ragu.com/home.asp

I don't prefer anything added to spaghetti sauce.

Since I make it from scratch, the"favorite brand" doesn't apply.

I can usually use a good sauce straight from the jar..IF it's good. The best I have had is Barilla but I don't use too many jarred sauces..most of them taste "old and cheap" to me.

If you prefer to use jarred spaghetti sauce instead of making your own, I would add a couple of tablespoons of red wine and 1 tablespoon of soy sauce. This gives it a nice depth in flavor.

I realized a few years ago that I was wasting my money even buying the really good stuff that comes in jars, becuase I'm just trying to overpower their seasonings with my own. Now I buy the fairly inexpensive sauce that comes in cans, mainly Hunt's, and use it as a sauce base, seasoning it myself.Spaghetti sauce, for me, involves lots of meat. When I'm making a big meal for four people, I use two cans of sauce and two pounds of browned lean ground chuck or, if I'm feeling like a Rockefeller that week, Maverick Ranch extra-lean ground beef. I have also used ground bison, which is leaner than all of the above. To the sauce I always add garlic, oregano, dried onion, a touch of apple cider vinegar, black pepper, salt, and a dash of Texas Pete if we want it spicy. Then it just needs to simmer for a few minutes so the flavors marry properly. Good stuff! My fiancee' and her teenage son had always used sauce from a jar and I'm not sure if they added their own spices or not, but they both seem to appreciate my do-it-yourself sauce.

But, I am a purist. I prefer to make my own sauce from scratch. I like to keep a jar or two on hand just in case, and I always doctor it up if I use it. I start with olive oil, a diced onion and a clove of garlic. Saute until the onions are translucent. Then I add the jarred sauce. I add about a 1/2 cup of red wine. Once it starts boiling I turn it off and add in chopped fresh basil. So, I guess i really to personalize the jarred sauce. I use the Hunts brand of jarred sauce.

Sun dried tomatoes and a dollop of barbecue sauce. And when the noodles are about halfway done, I add Restaurant Cut Frozen Vegetables from a huge bag we get at Costco. Got to sneak the veggies in however I can. The kids complained at first but when I called it Paste Primavera, it sounded classy enough to try...now they think the eat-out spaghetti is "doesn't taste right and is missing the veggies". ;)

and we ALWAYS personalize it, generally by adding ingredients to heat it up some. Jalapeno peppers, additional hot tomato sauce, onion, more garlic. Chunks of real tomato. We do a lot of fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants "fusion" cuisine, and generally it's Mexican or Chinese we're using as the fuse. And that's putting it a whole lot more formally than we tend to cook, too!

No, because I don't use jarred sauce.
