What can I say to people who (on the subject of veganism) make excuses to justify eating meat?

Excuses like:It's good.If I didn't eat it someone else would. It's already dead.I need my protein. It's 'natural' too us. ITS BULLs*** to me! People are so selfish and ignorant!

Nothing - everybody is entitled to their personal choice. You can inform them that a vegan diet it nutritionally complete, however it really is not your place to force your beliefs upon another. To all those who...Serena does not represent all vegans. There are a vast majority of us who like me respect personal choice.

its a choice, THEIR choice and its not for you to critisize. i dont chose to eat meat, but i would never think of trying to push that on someone who did. just like you decided NOT to eat meat, they decided TO eat meat, and thats fine. its people like you that make vegans and vegetarians look like preaching assholes. :(

" I definitely do not try to tell people how to live"But you ARE trying to do that. You're telling me that I'm selfish and ignorant for eating meat because of the way animals are treated. Those are 'negative' traits, so the logical conclusion is 'I need to alter my way of life to rid myself of those traits'. You aren't diectly trying to tell people how to live, but by saying that how they ARE living is bad, you are implying that they SHOULD BE living another way. I know how the animals are treated. I don't care. Bacon tastes good. Steak tastes good. You and I think about animals differently. There is no right or wrong here. Its a difference opinion. I respect your position of not eating meat. Now its your turn to do the same.

If you really want to spread veganism, the last thing you want to do is perpetuate the stereotype of the preachy, obnoxious vegan who lectures meat eaters. This is one of the big reasons why people don't become vegan- people like that are obnoxious! If you really want to promote veganism, just shrug when people justify their meat eating, say "It's my personal choice, and you're free to make your own choices" then share some delicious vegan food with them. They'll come away from it thinking that vegans are cool, not annoying 'holier-than-though' jerks.
by boing 2012-02-18 20:28:21
The only reason they make stupid comments is because they feel defensive. They're challenged by your lifestyle to not devour all living things like they do. As for all the meat eaters jumping in here to make a comment (again) is another reason why vegans get sick & tired of stupid comments. We (vegans) don't go & play in your meat eating forums, so why are you here in the vegetarian/vegan section??? Again, to make stupid comments & justify your lack of compassion for any other species... and blame it all back on us saying we're the ones who are argumentative!
by justwond... 2012-02-18 08:28:25
You shouldn't say anything to them because they can do what they want. It's their own lives. You wouldn't want someone to tell you what to eat, DON'T try to tell someone else what to eat.Of course if they are trying to start an argument you can just say, "sorry, I don't agree."
by Butterfly Lover 2012-02-18 03:28:20
You wouldn't (I hope) force your religious views on other people, so why do you think you have the right to force your dietary views on others?I think more people would take vegans seriously if they stopped being so self righteous and learn to just live and let live.
by Deer Hunter 2012-02-17 04:28:19
Well to answer your question, there is nothing you can say. Im neither selfish or ignorant young lady. Just because you think its wrong doesn't mean that it is. Its just your opinion. I believe in nature. If you look at nature, every living creature lives at the expense of another living creature. Its a fact and its natures way. Its how every living creature lives so why should I be any different. I will continue to eat meat no matter what.

The best general comeback is, "You don't have to justify yourself to me." The subtext of this comeback is that a) the other person is clearly feeling defensive, and b) that perhaps s/he should take it up with his/her own conscience, instead.Specifically,It's good. - "I was making no claim about taste."If I didn't eat it, someone else would. - "Whenever you buy meat, the companies know they should go produce more."It's already dead - "Yes. Do you want to hear how it died?"I need my protein. - "So do I. I get it by eating food."It's 'natural' to us. - "Nothing like the modern factory farming system is seen anywhere in nature."

The only time people will try to justify anything is if other people question or criticize them. Therefore, the only time most people including vegans, would give the reasons why they eat or don't eat anything is when other people push their beliefs on them. Your question is a good example of that. People are going about their daily lives while you are on here ranting and criticizing them"Excuses" imply that something is wrong or illegal. Eating meat is neither so 97% of the population your views on the matter. However, it is also obviously arrogant to think that you and your kind are the only ones right and others are wrong. Frankly, I find your reason of being vegan/vegetarian just excuses to attach a tag or call yourself a unique label in order to be "cool"...FYI0 all animal species are selfish. that's the way to ensure continuity of a species above all others. You think any other non domesticated animal will pick you over it's own species? Now that's ignorant
by Teddy 2012-02-16 10:28:25
With your attitude it is good you don't care if people hate you because most will at this rate. I already am not sure i like you. You can not shove your ideas down others throats or they will just lash out you are doing it wrong. Hell most of my relatives don't even know i am a vegetarian I just do not mention it because most people don't care. You need to realize that they do not want to hear it just leave them alone you are giving all of us a bad name thus making people lose any sympathy for animal rights thus you are hurting the animals.

It's good - Just because it tastes good doesn't mean it's morally correctIf I didn't eat it someone else would - I still cannot consciously eat another living thing and be morally ok with that. It's already dead - Yet again it is still morally wrong, I wouldn't eat it alive and I wouldn't eat it dead. If no one were to eat it, all the better, respect the dead.I need my protein - There are dozens of other alternatives to protein that don't require the loss of another living being. It's natural to us - Yeah, just as natural as the instinct for self preservation is. Too bad it just leads to greedy men who watch the sick die as they continue to eat their lobster dinner. Naturally people aren't always good. It's not bullshit, you have to understand that it's human nature to do these things. People need to create their own reasons to make it morally ok for them to eat these things. Eating meat is a necessary evil though. It's immoral yet people are addicted to it. They can't go on without tasting KFC again. You're the one that is ignorant, you don't even understand why people don't eat meat yet you don't eat meat yourself just so you can feel better than everyone else. THAT, is what I call selfish.I eat meat yet I'm conscious about how immoral it is. It's like eating chocolate knowing that the instant gratification that you're feeling now will kill you in a while. People eat meat for the instant gratification even though it costs lives just to be able to have a certain amount of dopamine released and feel good for the 5 minutes it takes you to eat. It's an addiction but it's so strongly wired into us that our society accepts it as the norm. We have much bigger problems to solve and other addictions to cure rather than this one that as of now, people won't recognize. People consider food addiction already crossing the line, but to have an addiction to meat sounds just absurd. The problem is that it doesn't help the animals, as long as it is ok'd by the majority, vegans are way too small of a population to be able to make any difference. you will not change anyone's mind about this. This is a personal decision. Shoving things down their throat will just cause them to associate vegans with aggressive douche bags and even if they accept that ideal to be right, they will become stubborn and oppose the entire idea just because of how you approach people about it.

I've been vegan for several years and haven't eaten meat since i was 13. I'm disappointed in people's lack of empathy towards animals (and other humans), and totally understand your frustration. I don't confront people about eating meat, though. If someone finds out i'm vegan and they approach me on the subject i'm more than happy to talk to them about it. I don't, I'm a new breed of superhuman who can survive without any protein at all! *obvious sarcasm*" But that's just because I'm sick of this one and I'm a sarcastic person. If I was feeling serious I'd say "Myth. Very bad myth made by greedy people.""It's 'natural' too us." "Yes, factory farming is SO natural."

I eat meat and do not give a sh$t what you think. My dinner is free range from small farms, besides no hormones and it being grass fed it just taste better. And yes I know how it is treated because I can go there and see for myself. The milk and eggs I eat comes from the same farms. It is like what we got years ago. All of us have the right to eat the way we want. Everyone in my family, going back many years as eaten meat, I have had 8 relatives that lived over a 100 years, one was 116. Most live to be over 90. One uncle died right after coming in from his fields, just died and the ME said he could have lived another 10 years. The ME in Uncle Bass's case, he was 116, the only thing wrong with was he was dead. My father was 75 and that was the youngest age any of his siblings had died and he died from cancer treatment, cancer form fiber glass in the lungs. type of cancer they kept talking about on TV. So till you can show me a family That as longer lifes than mine leave me the he!! alone about what I eat

its a choice, THEIR choice and its not for you to critisize. i dont chose to eat meat, but i would never think of trying to push that on someone who did. just like you decided NOT to eat meat, they decided TO eat meat, and thats fine. its people like you that make vegans and vegetarians look like preaching assholes. :(

The best thing you can do is to educate yourself on all the issues, so that you can intelligently respond and maybe get them thinking....It's already dead....the more consumption of meat goes down, the less animals the meat industry will produce. it's common sense...they aren't going to raise more animals than they can sell.I need protein....there is no reason to eat meat for protein. Even vegan athletes get enough protein from beans, nuts, and grains. It's natural....our ancestors were hunters, but as humans evolved they began growing crops. now our bodies are better designed to digest plants than meat. if we were really meant to eat meat we'd have claws and sharp teeth. instead we flat teeth, like a horse's, meant to grind plants and grains. we can't chase down anything, let alone eat meat raw, like real carnivores do. put a kid in a playpen with some fruit and a bunny...more than likely that kid will eat the fruit and play with the bunny. some carnivore...Just like you said...people ARE ignorant...it's not an insult, just a fact. I don't care much for PeTA, but they have a good faq page that can help you out more:http://www.peta.org/about/faq-veg.aspKeep sticking to your guns and just do what you can.=)Oh gosh, gotta reply to Deer Hunter..just because a lion eats an antelope doesn't mean we should do the same. we consider ourselves more intelligent than other animals. we also have morals...or should...which sets us apart from other animals. According to your way of thinking we should all do as we please and run around like apes. killing animals is wrong...that's an opinion? i think it's a fact. we generally don't go around killing each other because we recognize it as wrong...the fact that humans want to stuff their faces with an animals flesh or thrill at shooting a deer is what makes them disconnect...it's still as wrong as killing a human.

You wouldn't (I hope) force your religious views on other people, so why do you think you have the right to force your dietary views on others?I think more people would take vegans seriously if they stopped being so self righteous and learn to just live and let live.
by justwond... 2012-02-06 05:28:21
You shouldn't say anything to them because they can do what they want. It's their own lives. You wouldn't want someone to tell you what to eat, DON'T try to tell someone else what to eat.Of course if they are trying to start an argument you can just say, "sorry, I don't agree."
by Cliff 2012-02-05 22:28:28
I find it very hard to sympathize with the vegan cause when a large number of vegans say that I'm selfish and ignorant.
