They belong to two completely different families of plants. Lettuce is of the Asteraceae family of plants, which includes other food plants such as safflower, sunflower, chicory, globe artichoke, and Jerusalem artichoke. Cabbage belongs to the Brassicaceae or Cruciferae family, which includes broccoli, cauliflower, mustard, turnip, horseradish, radish, cress, and water cress. As others have noted, cabbage is quite a bit firmer in texture than lettuce, and noticeably heavier. You could tear iceburg lettuce apart with your bare hands, but would need to be a strongman to do that with cabbage (impress audiences by making coleslaw with your bare hands instead of wasting phone books...). Cabbage is also generally quite a bit more nutrient dense, as are its vegetable cousins. They can generally be used interchangeably. I often make a salad with cabbage instead of lettuce. Slice it very thin, add shredded carrots, onions, and a vinaigrette of olive oil and lemon juice or vinegar. Some people enjoy cooking iceburg lettuce, particularly the Chinese who use it in soups.

Cabbage leaves are thicker, and cabbage has a different smell. Also, they should be labeled in the store, so you can make sure which one you are buying.

Boiled cabbage is soft and has a different texture to boiled lettuce. Boiled lettuce is disgusting (think of lettuce that's been on a burger for hours)Cabbage is crunchier and thicker. It's also pailer usually. The iceberg lettuce looks like a cabbage, but there are other kinds of lettice who don't (rocket etc).

Cabbage is hard and tough.and Lettuce is softer than cabbage.maybe you should try this: take a cabbage and try tearing a piece off of it.if the piece is tough than it's cabbage.do the same with the lettuce... unless your using the softer type of cabbage.other than that the best way is just wash the veggies thoroughly, get a piece and taste them raw before you start cooking.you'll never find out if you don't try ( =I hope this was helpful good luck.

You might have an easier time telling them apart if you stop buying head lettuce, which looks more like cabbage and isn't as good for you anyway, and start buying leaf lettuce like Romaine.

both contain a lot of water but lettuce is lighter in texture and taste. it also turns brown more quickly especially after it's been cut. cabbage has a firmer more sturdy and crunchy texture even after you've cooked or dressed it. it doesn't oxidize like lettuce. Cabbage is also a lot heavier than a head of lettuce.

you have to cut cabbage but smack lettuce to seperate the fiber/leaves. The fore is good raw for Coalslaw [sp] and best in ''Spring Rolls' when cooked down [Corned-beef on St Patties day is my only over-indulgence in Cabbage] But I love a good Gorganzola Salade anyday [ if not rusted] [never eat cooked LETTUCE unless in Mexican food with Beans and Grease ][L0L ]
